Luke Hache
Luke, what were you up to before coming here?
Last year I was in high school at Harbour View, doing all my co-op classes and taking as many shop classes as I could get. I also ended up representing Team NB with Skills Canada, going to Provincials and Nationals. After all that, I pretty much came straight here. I applied to Ready Arc a year and a half before I even left high school.
Why welding?
The academic side of high school wasn’t really my strong suit so I decided to take welding as one of my shop classes, almost as just a filler. I ended up really enjoying it so I kept going, getting better and better, and here I am today.
What made you choose Ready Arc?
I had heard a lot of good things (and some not-so-great things about other places). The word is around about Ready Arc, big time. I know people that have come here and they all recommended it. I decided just to spend the money to go here, make the investment, and to get everything I could out of it.
So, how were your six months with us?
It was really fun, but a ton of hard work. For classroom work, you definitely have to do some studying – you can’t just mess around and not do anything, you have to get it done. Shop time was awesome, that four hours a day is definitely needed. As far as the instructors, Steve was a huge help in the shop and was really great at the theory part of things, and Jason was so helpful with things like math and blueprint.
You made it to graduation day. What’s next?
I’m here helping out for the next week or so, getting Ready Arc set up for the next class, then over to Gerry’s Welding (now KMac) for a couple of years to get my Red Seal. I’ve actually got enough hours here to work a few months and then go write my Block 2. My future plan is to move to Halifax and work in the shipyard, hopefully for the rest of my life.
